We had a great week with a star studded group of players across the 17 teams involved in the 2021 FHSI Classic. We will name the Player and Pitchers of the Week, the All-Classic team, and the Championship Game MVP for the first time!
Player of the Week
Isaiah Barkett, Oviedo Lions
Barkett led the Lions on offense, which is a remarkable feat in itself as Oviedo scored 43 runs in their undefeated week of play. Unfortunately for the Lions, they were not able to compete for the Championship due to tiebreakers, but that does not take away from their fantastic week of play. Barkett went 7/12 on the week which was good for a robust .583 BA. He smacked two doubles, drove in six runs including two sac flys, walked three times, and stole four bags while coming around to score nine times himself. The junior plays all over the field and is currently uncommitted.
Pitcher of the Week
Will Ross, West Orange
On the final day of Pool Play, Will Ross was sensational on the mound for the Warriors when he threw a complete game shutout. In that game, he struck out seven batters, including the final three of the game and only allowed four hits and one walk. He also made a relief appearance earlier in the week when he threw a perfect inning. The junior is committed to the University of Florida.
Championship Game MVP
RHP Rylan Townsend, Hagerty Huskies
With the championship on the line, Townsend pitched his tail off to keep the Huskies in the game and was rewarded for his efforts with the win. Townsend would allow a run in the second inning to Lake Howell, but it would be the only one he allowed over five frames. He would load the bases in the fifth inning with only one out recorded, but dug down deep and stranded the runners on the bases before the Huskies tied the game up in the bottom of the inning. When Townsend’s work was complete after five, Hagerty would score the leading, and ultimately game winning run giving him the win. Townsend only allowed two hits in the game, and finished the tournament with a 0.87 ERA.
